BrCCC Chapter Meeting Minutes
28 Feb 2022
98 members present
- President’s Report (Emily)
- Mask mandate change?
- No decisions yet; president Douglas asked union presidents to have this discussion; what should Bristol do? Some folks are okay with no masks, others are not; members should reach out to Emily and Colleen if they have further concerns
- In Person vs. Zoom Meetings Fall 2022
- Modality of chapter meetings? Zoom or in person; virtual gets more participation, but not as collegial
- Members voting: 56% voted for hybrid
- Member comments: zoom is helpful for allowing adjunct participation; some hearing/speaker problems with hybrid; remote classes have not had speaker problems; folks on other campuses can participate more often; should be clear about hybrid; be sure what can and cannot be done on zoom and hybrid; we still have time, but we want to publish meeting calendar soon; most want at least some zoom included; maybe first and last hybrid; opening day will be in person, so first meeting
- **Recommend: first meeting in person (opening day) and then zoom unless otherwise noted
- Mask mandate change?
- Search Committee Petition
- Thanks to all who signed petition; advisors told that subordinates could not sit on search committee for supervisors; 115 signatures as of today; filed a grievance and asked for names of MCCC members on the committees; would like to send petition by tomorrow afternoon
- Grievance Team Report (Autumn)
- Development Ed Stipend – Step 1 denied, Moving to Mediation
- Paying only for one development modality $500; statewide interprets it as $500 for each modality; would be upward of $90,000; should have been taken up at the state level; state says no; going to mediation and arbitration
- Student Senate Process – Step 1 TBD
- Member filed grievance against senate process; nothing to prevent student senate from proposing things that violate our contract; want to empower student involvement, but only that doesn’t violate contract.
- Advising Director Searches – Step 1 TBD
- Same as above
- NUPS Requesting One on Ones – Step 1 TBD
- Deans scheduling one on one meetings; should not be happening under contract
- More in the works – Reassigned Time & Seniority
- Chairs and coordinator positions up for rehire; reassign times have been changed; should not change if job/duties have not changed; added things to contract language (some wiggle room-other duties as assigned); members should look at job descriptions to be sure duties have not changed
- Question about seniority: one member taught directed studies with between two and seven, none count toward seniority; member has lost seniority
- What else is going on with members that need our attention?
- Please speak up immediately; 30-day timeline only; use personal email addresses
- Sent a cease and dismiss order over moving AFSME duties to MCCC members
- Development Ed Stipend – Step 1 denied, Moving to Mediation
- Professional Staff Report (Susan)
- No new updates; be sure to use comp time for vaccine status upload
- AFSME work has been done by professional staff MCCC members
- Asked for information about how many people have separated from the college—told that list is coming
- Let exec committee know who is missing in their area
- DCE Representative Report (Catherine)
- Adjuncts should have received ballot to vote for contract
- Last Friday meeting—voted unanimously to accept; one of the best contracts in recent years; board of directors have recommended, too; heath insurance bill is moving along: hopeful; reminder: if you want to roll over OBRA into retirement account, possible but during a small window of time
- Chapter Director Report (Colleen)
-
- Meeting to discuss DCE Tentative Agreement 2/28, 6 – 7:30pm
- Tonight from 6-7:30 al under DCE contract committee will be there to answer questions; email forthcoming
- MCCC meet the Candidates night Monday, 3/7, 5pm
- Must register first
- Day Bargaining Update and call for CAT representative from Bristol
- Every campus should have a member who will coordinate actions on campus
- Research Coordinator Report
- For MCCC; looks at long-term trends including admin to faculty ratio; DCE course sessions; member ship trends will send out via email
- MTA virtual conferences
- Skill building to title IV to student loan forgiveness
- Autumn: syllabi returned for corrections only 10 days; when materials returned, can delete syllabus; all should be complete by March 21st or may face consequences
- Motion: Work to Rule
- Autumn serving as proxy for Sandy Lygren
- Issues:
- Sneaking new tasks into job descriptions
- Reducing/changing reassign time
- Schedule changes/arbitrary
- Face to face with no rational
- Day negotiations going very poorly
- Management disagreed with all points
- Asked for 5%; offered 2%
- WTR might give bargaining team
- Motion: BRCCC to go on Work to Rule immediately
- Second: Autumn Alden
- Discussion:
- Will it help professional staff? Have duties as assigned
- Day contract negotiations going very poorly, but DCE did too at first; might day contract go the same way? Might want to apply pressure so process shorter
- ***If passes, someone will reach out to other colleges to get on board
- Not a perfect tool
- Biggest concern is contract; try to get other CCs on board rather than on a local level; should be careful of using it too quickly
- Contract action member needed from Bristol
- Question called; members voting: 18% yea vote; 42% nay; 40% abstained
