Votes of No Confidence:
On Monday 5/12, BrCCC and AFSCME collectively voted no confidence in Andrew Fisher, Emmanuel Echevarria, and Kate O’Hara. Each vote of no confidence was presented as a separate motion, and each motion passed with 95% approval. President Harris has been informed of these votes. Rationale for each vote was provided based upon what members of both unions said when they spoke in favor of these motions. Recall that this meeting was scheduled after a supermajority of attendees at the joint MCCC/AFSCME meeting on Wednesday 5/7 requested a follow up meeting to consider these motions.
Impact Bargaining for 4 Day Work Week:
The notification of this change was received by the state chapter on May 5. We are looking to bargain this matter during the first week of June. If you would like to attend an organizational meeting to discuss what needs to be bargained, please reply to this email or send a message to mikegeary120776@gmail.com. Given the fact that all professional staff are potentially impacted by this opportunity, the college did not list any specific names of impacted employees. I’m looking to schedule the planning meeting for this issue either later next week or early in the first week of June. Bargaining will likely be later in that week.
Impact Bargaining for SSEM Reorganization:
The notification of this reorganization was received by the state chapter on May 12. We are also looking to bargain this matter in the first week of June. We’ll be bargaining it separately from the 4 Day Work Week. I do have a list of members who will be impacted by the reorganization. I will be reaching out to you shortly to see if you would like to attend the planning meeting for this matter. I’m also looking to schedule this issue either later next week or early in the first week of June. If you are not being impacted by this reorganization, you will not hear from me about it.
Impact Bargaining for AA Reorganization and Chairs/Coordinators Reassign Time:
The state chapter has not yet been notified by college’s legal team about bargaining this issue. HR has indicated that they want to bargain these two issues collectively. Because no official notification has been sent yet, there is currently no timetable for when bargaining for either of these issues will occur. When I know more, I will share it with you.
MACER Meeting: We have our final, much delayed MACER meeting of the year this afternoon. President Harris will be attending along with Andrew, Emmanuel, and Kate. On our side, myself, Anthony Ucci, Amy Marden, Marcus Christopher, Amanda Beaulieu-Smith, Stacie Charbonneau Hess, and Livia Neubert will be attending. We will provide you with a MACER update once we have had time to debrief after the meeting.
Grievances: Numerous Chairs and Coordinators have filed grievances related to reduced reassign time for their respective roles. We also filed a Chapter Grievance related to this issue. These hearings have started this week and are currently scheduled through the middle of June. Kudos to Anthony, Amy, Kelli Hiller, Deb Anderson, Livia, and Laura Hogan who are working hard to represent all of the members with these grievances.
Board of Trustees Meeting: The next Board of Trustees Meeting is Monday June 2 at 4:00 PM at the Taunton Center. We are looking to have silent observers attend this meeting. BrCCC has two presentations. JP Nadeau will be presenting about the Fair Pay initiative. I’ll be presenting the annual BrCCC report to the trustees, which will highlight the White Paper, Votes of No Confidence, uptick in grievances, etc. Also, Melanie Johnson will be presenting the annual AFSCME report. I will be sending a calendar invite to remind you of the meeting. Think of this as local strategic action. I’ll say more about what we are planning as we get a bit closer.

March 24 2025

Here are THREE things you can do TODAY  to participate in the MCCC/MTA FAIR PAY Campaign for Faculty and Professional Staff:
1. Fill out the “Love Community College” Postcard in your Mailbox (on the Fall River Campus) and return by Thursday morning to JP Nadeau’s mailbox in B105 on the Fall River campus.  These cards will be hand delivered to Representative Carole Fiola  this Friday, February 28.
Note: Due to limited supply, not every member may have received a postcard.  Don’t worry, you can STILL take action (see below).
2. Sign the Petition: https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/lovemccc.
3. Share the word about the campaign with your family, friends and neighbors!  Ask THEM to sign the petition! We need to build momentum and support with Massachusetts residents.

W 10 January 2024

On 12/21, the DCE Negotiating team received an offer from management. They are offering a 1 year contract with a raise of 8%. The first 4% would be for the Fall 2023 semester, and the second 4% would be for the Spring 2024 semester. Because of the holidays, the bargaining team had not yet had the chance to discuss the offer. However, they have promised to provide a more thorough update this month.

Great news! As of today, 246 Bristol folks have signed the petition, which is 64% of our membership.  Let’s keep up the momentum!
1. Please take a moment to both sign and share with all of your networks this petition to the Governor for the MCCC to get the same 8% raise as every other higher education unit in the state.   People do not have to be MCCC members or employees of the state community college level in order to sign the petition.
 https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/cherish-our-community-colleges.

2. We need volunteers to gather signatures on campus.  ANYONE can sign this petition: AFSCME, NUPS, Students, etc.

If you are interested in tabling, please contact Colleen Avedikian ASAP colleen.avedikian@bristol.cc.edu

Please find Below a description of the Statewide Project to End Privatization of Public Colleges, led by two faculty from Salem State University (Joanna Gonsalves and Rich Levy).    The project seeks students, faculty, librarians and professional staff interested in understanding, uncovering and organizing against privatization on public higher education campuses in Massachusetts and its harmful effects. This project will run fall 2023 through spring 2024.  The project is looking for both volunteer and paid positions.
